If anyone out there reading this has any suggestions or comments or anything at all to say, please do so. We want to hear what people think about what we're doing. Does anyone have any ideas about how to make some money off the land? What is better: having goats or a cow? What is the best way to make cheese? What kind of truck should we get? Can we dam our creek to make a trout pond? How do we do it?
Anyone?

mmmmmm...turducken..
thanks for the info jeff.
I would love to eventually get wind power going on the farm. The start up cost is prohibitive, but it might work out in the long run. The long term plan is to build on the land. The idea is that the house we would build would be ultimately off the grid entirely. At this point in the game, this idea seems a long way off. Maybe by the time we're ready to do it, technologies like solar and wind will be down in price.
I have an abstract recommendation. Keep thinking in terms of relationships, not individual items. When you consider goats or cows, think about what they will eat and what will eat them and their shit. When you consider plants, consider plant communities, or guilds, as Toby Hemenway calls them. His book is called Gaia's Garden and it's fantastic. And, financially when you think about what to grow or raise, always sell direct to customers. So, find your customers (restaurants in Eau Claire might be the best place to start. There's my two cents. And I've got a whole pocket full of them.
